Abstract artists such as: Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Willem De Kooning, and Mark Rothko, were prolifically creating a New Art in New York during the thirties, forties, and fifties.
Their art was a breakaway from the representational fetish for form. It was an evolution of the trail-blazing abstract art produced in the early twentieth century, by artists such as: Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian.
These pioneering virtuosos were creating dynamic action paintings that were executed right there in the moment. As dramatic brushstrokes of colour landed spontaneously on the canvas with improvised styles, they displayed a thrilling new art form.
In essence, they were inventing on the canvas worlds and universes never seen before, that had nothing do with existing reality.
During this era, in New York, there was contemporaneously the Jazz musicians performing a new form of music in packed-out clubs, which were hustling and bustling with excitement.
They were creating and performing in the moment, improvised music before their enraptured audiences.
Their upbeat music had a new sound, a new feeling, a new sensation which was unique and alive with life. To name but a few illustrious figures: Charlie parker, Max Roach, Fletcher Henderson.
Improvisation, going off anywhere, in any direction, off any tangent, towards new adventures, is living life in the moment.
