Eat better, feel better.
A great place to start in transforming personal health, energy, and the vitality you need to pursue what you desire in life; is through nutrition. Expanding your energy, power, feeling healthy, and alive comes through various vectors in life. However, in this blog I’m focusing on nutrition specifically .
Eating better nutrition supports you in life as it provides you with greater energy for what want and need to do in life. Consuming quality nutrition supports you in feeling better and more alive.
Sounds Great, but what foods to eat? And where to start?
Feeling alive and energised requires eating healthy and alive food, that contains sufficient energy. Alive food is fresh food, that has its nutrients still active. And when digested will provide you with sufficient sustenance with the vitamins and minerals it contains.
How to find the fresh food you need? I recommend looking for local farmer’s market in your community, as the food there will be more fresh and has travelled less. Food that has travelled less will be more alive with the nutrients it contains; which will energise you and provide the necessary nutrition required.
Consider, looking into growing some fresh herbs and vegetables in your garden if you have one. If you live in flat or don’t have a garden, then grow some herbs by the window. Growing fresh food guarantees you getting quality nutrition. In the UK, you can apply for an allotment plot. I have an allotment plot myself now for 2 years, and it was one of the best things I have ever done.
I recommend consuming food that organic or close to organic as you can. Modern agriculture involves growing food that is contaminated with chemicals such as: pesticides and fertilisers, which have tremendously negative impact on your health and energy.
Asides from where you source your food, there is what and how much you should eat.
In society today there is a plethora of fad diets out there. These diets are usually designed for weight loss and not focused on expanding your energy, improving health and longevity.
My approach to nutrition is to eat a diet that is balanced, fresh, and nutritionally rich. I recommend avoiding processed foods as much as possible, instead prepare your food fresh. keep it simple.
What food groups to eat? I use a ladder to represent the foods to eat. On this ladder you can eat anything on there. However, I do recommend you consume more from the top steps of the ladder.
Food ladder
The food ladder is all about eating food as fresh and nutritious as possible, from food groups that are healthy and nourishing. This approach is not restrictive, no calorie counting required. You eat when you feel hungry and need some energy.
Top of the ladder is fresh fruits and vegetables. Then comes nuts and seeds, followed by all varieties of grains and pulses. These I would consider the most nutritious groups of food that will provide you with energy.
Lower rungs of the ladder start with fish and eggs. Under that step is meat and poultry, and the bottom step is dairy.
Bare in mind, I’m not condemning the lower rungs of the ladder, these food groups are still vital in keeping you healthy, and are part of a balanced approach to nutrition.
Another point to add, is that you enjoy what you eat, don’t feel deprived or restricted by what you do and don’t eat. And if you occasionally stray with some junk food that’s fine. The key is being consistent and committed to eating healthy.
There are certain types food though, which I advise you don’t eat or keep to an absolute minimum. These are: sugars ( particularly refined), high fructose corn syrup, MSG, sweeteners ( namely aspartame and acesulfame ), and artificial flavourings and colourings.
As a rule: eat fresh, whole, and natural foods. And avoid as much as possible processed foods.
In regards to what to drink, I would recommend consuming plenty of fresh water and herbal teas throughout day. Stay hydrated. Avoid fizzy drinks full of sugars and sweeteners. And keep caffeine consumption to minimum. Research has shown that one or two cups of coffee day is beneficial. However, excessive consumption has a negative impact on health. Enjoy your Java or Robusta, but just a cup or two is enough.
Supplements
Modern agriculture and the way food is produced nowadays, means that food is not as nutrient dense as before. Therefore, it is fantastic if you can grow your own food. However, that’s maybe not possible for you.
This is where supplements can play a vital role in providing you with the extra nutrients you may require. What supplements do you need? I strongly recommend researching for yourself on supplements, and which ones could benefit your own individual needs.
However, I can give some recommendations. Firstly look into consuming digestive enzymes and research into how they can help you. The microbes in your stomach play a significant role in your health physically, emotionally and mentally.
Therefore, its vital you take care of your gut health. Personally, I consume a high quality of standard : acidophilus for improving my digestive health. Healthy microbes in your stomach will improve your health and how you feel. I also drink kefir milk which is fantastic for boosting gut health. Fermented foods are another great way to boost your bacteria.
Another supplement I recommend for health and longevity is Colostrum. Which has been shown to help with inflammation, boosting immune system, and improving digestive health.
Once again, I recommend doing your own research and shop around for the best products.
Vitamin C supplements I strongly recommend for boosting your health and immune system. I suggest purchasing it in powder form. Vitamin C powder will be in the from of ascorbic acid, a powder form is processed more effectively by the body.
For men I recommend consuming Zinc, Saw Palmetto and Ginseng. These supplements can provide support in improving your health and energy.
Women can benefit from a iron supplement and chlorella. Research ,and look around for a product that is of high quality.
A high quality multivitamin, is a recommendation of mine and can provide the support you need for living well and being healthy. I suggest with supplements that you view them as additional support to your nutrition. Food is ultimately the primary factor in eating well, and see supplements, as just that. They’re to give you a boost.
Feeling better starts by making the conscious choice to commit yourself ,to eating better. Take action today, visit your local farmers’ market, and purchase some fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats. Try to start growing your own food. look up some recipes and prepare a meal from scratch, that will give you far greater energy than some ready made meal which is processed.
I hope you found this article helpful, and has given you some direction in where to go next, so you can eat well and feel better.
